An unexpected adventure in Puerto Rico
Last spring, my roommate and I pooled our Delta SkyMiles, booked a newly-renovated boutique hotel and found ourselves in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This U.S. territory was not exactly on my bucket list, but the idea of warm sun and sandy beaches lured us in. Our impromptu decision was a good one, as our expectations for a March vacation were exceeded! We not only enjoyed our ocean-view room only steps from the water, but also a day-long, rainy hike through Puerto Rico’s El Yunque rain forest. One would assume that a rain forest would be, indeed, a wet experience, and we were showered with warm rain the entire day as we explored and hiked. I have never been more thoroughly soaked in my life, making our careful photos even more priceless.
With no passport required for U.S. citizens and the acceptance of the U.S. dollar, traveling to Puerto Rico is easy, safe and worthwhile. The beaches are as pristine as any tropical paradise, and the island is rich in history and culture. While many North American travelers opt for a Mexican resort for a winter vacation, I’m happy that we broke out of that mold and found ourselves on the sandy beaches of San Juan. We discovered adventure, relaxation, and more during those six days, and I had a killer tan to prove it!
