• My 4th of July holiday on the lake

Like most people in Minnesota the 4th of July holiday, for me, means spending time at the lake. For my family, it is one of the biggest holidays of the year.

All of us gather at the lake home – there are usually about 100 of us.  We set up camp, grab a couch or find some nice grass to make our beds and settle in for the weekend. It’s usually very hot so finding shade and/or having fun in the water is essential. There are boat parades, water balloon fights, LOTS of food and spending time with family and friends.  It is a great way for us all to catch up, relax and have some fun.

When evening comes … most homes around the lake are ready for the fireworks “competition.” As it starts to get dark, you see at least seven homes around the small lake begin to light off their shows. As one lights off one of their best it will be followed by the house down the shore lighting off one of their best.

Eventually the finale for the best fireworks display begins.  This is the true competition, it goes on for what seems like a half-hour – nonstop explosions, colors, popping all around the lake.  You can hear the cheers/jeers from the family across the lake as their show or one of the neighbors’ shows goes up.  It is truly an enjoyable weekend celebration for our family.

I would love to hear some of your 4th of July traditions, please share.
