Ah … to feel the warm breeze of the Caribbean air, hear the sound of breaking waves, and feel the soft sand between your toes as you stroll along one of the many fabulous beaches. The Caribbean offers an experience that simply can’t be beat — here’s a small sample of the numerous options.

Turks and Caicos
The Turks and Caicos islands — 40 in all, of which only eight are inhabited — are scattered just south of the Bahamas and are the perfect destination for a Caribbean vacation. Nestled in its warm, turquoise waters, visitors will find stretches of uncrowded beaches, legendary diving, snorkeling and fishing around the vibrant coral reefs. Those looking for some activity beyond water sports can island-hop by ferry or rove on-island on a rented bike or scooter.

St. Thomas
Although it’s only 32 square miles in size, St. Thomas has a million miles worth of things to do and combines natural beauty with a cosmopolitan atmosphere. Charlotte Amalie is the capital of the U. S. Virgin Islands and is the most popular cruise port in the Caribbean. In Charlotte Amalie (named for a Danish queen), you’ll find pastel houses sprinkled against a background of emerald hills. Check out the St. Thomas Sky Ride, which takes you 700 feet above the city to Paradise Point where the views are simply spectacular! And beach lovers won’t want to miss Magens Bay, celebrated as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.

Cayman Islands
Comprised of three islands (Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman) the Cayman Islands are a favorite of water enthusiasts and sun seekers. Ringed by coral reefs and pristine azure waters, these three islands are a marine paradise for snorkelers and scuba divers. You can swim with stingrays in sparkling shallows, dive amid rainbow-hued fish along coral reefs, or simply plunk yourself down on one of the many white-sand beaches.

Carlson Wagonlit Travel’s Leisure division is hosting a Cruise & Vacation Expo at the Mall of America on January 12 (Macy’s Court, 10am – 6pm). There will be 26 travel vendors and tourist boards represented. It’s a great place to get more information on a destination and plan your winter escape!
