For U.S. citizens traveling or residing outside the United States, taking measures to enhance your safety has never been more important.  Today, U.S. citizens have the opportunity to register in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) which is run by the Department of State. 2110701-pushpins-in-a-map

Previously known as the “Registration with Embassies” program, STEP allows you to create an account and provide basic personal information about yourself as well as emergency contact information for a person who is not traveling with you. Once your account has been established, you may add trip or overseas residence information each time you prepare to travel.

For more information about this beneficial service, go to https://step.state.gov/step/By enrolling in STEP, you make it possible for the Department of State to contact you with information about dangerous conditions affecting your overseas travel. In addition, the U.S. consular officers can assist you in an emergency by providing names of local attorneys or doctors should you encounter legal or medical difficulties.  In certain circumstances, they can also provide loans to traveling Americans who find themselves in financial trouble.

Before your next trip abroad, take the time to enroll in STEP.

It’s about your safety. It’s about your life. It’s worth the effort.
