• Loyalty programs go outside the box

    Jessica Weinberger
Chances are you’re enrolled in more loyalty programs than you think – credit card companies, retail stores and even gas stations want to reward loyal customers for their business. The travel industry is no exception, as airlines, hoteliers and car rental companies want you to come back every time you travel for business or pleasure.

To differentiate from the pack, many suppliers have uniquely crafted their loyalty programs to offer exclusive perks for brand loyalty. Read on for details on two programs that hope to drive membership through creative earning and reward opportunities, and be sure to share details on your favorite travel industry loyalty programs in the comment box.

    Delta Air Lines

SkyMiles is Delta Air Lines’ frequent flyer program, with more than 74 million members. Along with booking award travel, SkyMiles members have several options to redeem their miles. In addition to access to the SkyMiles Marketplace, featuring a variety of product, gift card and travel redemption options, members in the U.S. can also participate in the SkyMiles Online Auction. Using miles, members can bid on once-in-a-lifetime opportunities that change regularly, such as a three-night Grand Cayman vacation, tickets to the “Phantom of the Opera,” featuring a meet-and-greet with the lead actor, or even a dinner and kitchen tour at a top New York City restaurant.

When travelers want to redeem their HHonors points, they can exchange their points and miles with more than 30 participating airlines and mileage rewards programs or convert the points through rewards programs like Citi ThankYou® Rewards and Diners Club International Club Rewards. In a giving mood? Travelers can also opt to gift points to friends or family or even donate the points to a good cause.
