As enrollment in TSA PreCheck passes the 1 million mark and continues to grow, part of the early membership in the group may find themselves receiving the PreCheck benefits less and less frequently.
According to the U.S. Transportation Safety Administration’s blog, travelers who were put into the PreCheck system by an airline or through a frequent flyer program may not get the logo on their boarding pass if they do not have a Known Traveler Number (KTN).
This is more likely to affect travelers who have had PreCheck since 2011.

The TSA is encouraging those travelers to apply for the PreCheck program, or choose one of the other three trusted traveler programs. A chart comparing the benefits of PreCheck (primarily U.S. travel), NEXUS (between U.S. and Canada), SENTRI (into the U.S. from Mexico) and Global Entry (global travel) is on the Department of Homeland Security website.
If PreCheck is the program that makes most sense, you’re in luck, because it is easy to apply and inexpensive. As CWT Savvy Traveler blogger Patrick Coleman wrote last year: “Even if your company won’t pay the $85, this service is definitely worth $17 a year for five years. Even for someone like me who only flies a few times a year.”
If you have a KTN, make sure you have it on your traveler profile everywhere you book travel, whether it’s through a travel management company, the airlines directly, or a consumer travel website or app.
